Windstar Cruises’ winter Mediterranean cruise turned out to be an incredible success, proving that a winter cruise in the Mediterranean could offer an experience like no other. It was not Windstar’s original intent. However, forced to make a bold move due to circumstances beyond their control in 2023 (the ship was initially set to port in Israel), Windstar has shown time and time again that making bold moves is something this small ship company is very good at!

As someone who was invited to sail on that inaugural Windstar winter Mediterranean cruise journey, I can confidently say that this cruise was an absolute game-changer. From the unexpectedly perfect weather to the festive Christmas markets and charming, less-crowded cities, it was a trip I’ll never forget. Here’s why you should consider making a Windstar winter Mediterranean cruise your next fall or winter adventure.

A Winter Cruise Like No Other

Small Crowds and Great Weather when you cruise in winter

Winter differs from when people think of cruising the Mediterranean, which makes it unique! Without the summer crowds, we explored iconic destinations with a sense of exclusivity. Imagine wandering through the streets of Rome, Barcelona, or Monte Carlo without the usual throngs of tourists. And the weather? Surprisingly mild and sunny, it felt like a perfect spring day rather than the heart of winter.

Festive Christmas Markets

We cruised just before the Christmas holiday. A winter Mediterranean cruise can also allow you to experience some of Europe’s most enchanting Christmas markets. From sipping hot mulled wine in the French Riviera to browsing handcrafted gifts in Barcelona, it was the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit. Each stop offered its own unique festive flair, making the trip feel even more special, and with each stop the magic of winter in the Mediterranean unfolding.

Highlights – Cruising Winter in the Mediterranean

Civitavecchia (Rome)

This port serves as the gateway to the Eternal City. With fewer tourists, visiting iconic sites like the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Trevi Fountain felt like a private tour. Strolling through Rome’s historic streets and enjoying the local cuisine without the typical hustle and bustle was an absolute treat.

Your Mediterranean cruise begins in the port city of Civitavecchia, Italy. You will have the opportunity to visit both the ancient city of Rome and this charming port city before boarding your ship and starting your journey to experience a magical Windstar winter Mediterranean cruise.

Livorno (Tuscany)

The charming village of Lucca, Italy. It was so lovely and festive, but not at all crowded.
Here I am in the charming Italian village of Lucca. The Holiday was everywhere, the crowds were not!

From Livorno, you have access to the rolling hills of Tuscany, the art of Florence, and the leaning tower of Pisa. While there were options for a wine-tasting tour, or to enjoying the serene landscapes and exceptional Tuscan wines. I chose to visit the charming village of Lucca with a stop in Pisa.

Lucca was one of my favorite stops of the itinerary and a place I hope to return. This cruise excursion was a holiday delight for our magical Mediterranean winter. It was just so charming, right from the screen of a movie. In fact, we were informed that several notable movie stars were set to land in town any day to begin filming. We then stopped by the leaning tower of Pisa for a few photos before making our way back to the ship. If you’re a fan of a charming Italian village, this stop is a must!

Nice (Monte Carlo)

Nice and Monte Carlo were undoubtedly the stars of this cruise. An overnight stay, which is common to many Windstar itineraries, in this glamorous corner of the French Riviera allowed us to soak up the charm of Nice’s Promenade des Anglais, explore Monte Carlo’s opulent casinos, and enjoy some of the best views on the Mediterranean coast. The blend of luxury, history, and stunning natural beauty was unforgettable.

Another excursion during my Windstar winter Mediterranean cruise, I was able to visit more Christmas markets in Nice France and drink Champagne in an igloo.
The view in Nice, France, as I sip champagne from an “igloo” at their Christmas market and look out at the festivities.

The largest and most glamours of the Christmas markets we encountered were in this area. In Nice, there was a large and quite extensive market near the promenade, complete with a Champagne Igloo (You are in France, Oui). Then, there was the most opulent Christmas market in Monte Carlo, just outside of the Gran Casino. If there is one thing you should not miss, it would be this experience, and you should be sure to see it lit up at night!

Marseilles

Marseilles is a port city with a vibrant local culture and beautiful coastal scenery. We spent the day exploring the old port, savoring fresh seafood, and visiting the historic Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica for panoramic city views.

This Mediterranean port city surprised me with its hard steel exterior and soft artisan core. Windstar cruise excursions offer some very magical, off-the-beaten path options, and during the winter, while the crowds are pretty low, this is even more magnificent. We had a chance to see many of the artisan areas of this oft thought of as a city with a storied past. I found it to be quite lovely, and the Marina area is a remarkable place to have a late lunch and a famous Cote d’Azur Rosé.

Barcelona

Ending the cruise in Barcelona was the perfect finale. From the breathtaking architecture of Gaudí’s Sagrada Família to the lively energy of La Rambla, Barcelona’s mix of modernist style and traditional charm left us enchanted. It’s a city that never fails to inspire.

Tips for Winter Cruising in the Mediterranean

What to Pack

Layers are your best friend! The weather can range from cool mornings to warm afternoons, so pack light sweaters, a good jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget a stylish scarf or two for those windy days on a Windstar winter Mediterranean cruise!

Weather Considerations

Expect milder temperatures than you would find in northern Europe or the U.S. at this time of year. December temperatures in the Mediterranean can range from the mid-50s to low-60s (10-16°C), making it a comfortable time to explore.

Would you even think it’s winter? We had numerous opportunities to hop in the hot tubs and relax on deck. The weather was great!
